Now that the new A Forest Of Stars album is out and I saw by chance the music video of Helpless Corpses Enactment of the band Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, makes you inevitably think about why a certain group of music genres, but especially in the neo folk and black metal, the music a nostalgic aesthetics tries to lend. Be it as the first band, the whole concept or as in the music video for Helpless Corpses Enactment has the appearance as if it were crawling directly from the pores of a Tintentfisches. Sepia lives. How far you manage to implement the theme of musical nostalgia is already a very interesting question, because the yearning for the past is distorted on electric guitars, modern percussion and a vocal style that emerged a few decades ago, not really clear, I would think.
The neo folk have of course a lot easier, because with their old string instruments and authentic folk instruments, it is probably much easier to carry the smell of a grandfather's basement in the nose. The lyrical concept of this band is then in most cases not more than a naturalistic depiction of different periods of our history. Why is it so many in the years 1933 to 1945 focus, is beyond me, but that should not now be the subject. Much more interesting is to see that the folk followers appear to approach with a completely different approach than the metal artist. An isolation from the modern world is certainly not unusual, the followers of neo Folks, however, try their entire life (I am of course always the most consistent ideally) be positioned so that the real time history does not matter, sense of life is perhaps not as realistic as mine. If we now fixated on past times, so you forget not only the current relevance, but focuses only so many to the few years. That was the bulk of the population at that time but also a future and a past, is here ignored. This should be a sentence, probably because this subculture is not at all to this claim ran the story, yet it seems to me a little set up.
an interesting approach for me just follow bands such as A Forest Of Stars, Throndt or Ulver (including the electronic stuff), because this will create a nostalgic aesthetics, the artistic and not as purist as that of the Neo Folkler, it is still an atmosphere creates, in which one can, whether short or long term can be isolated from the outside world. This is not yet untouched field of music, because musicians have always tried to create worlds and soundscapes, where they agree, the common music journalist, say, can lose. Is now by the nostalgic, romantic or psychedelic motifs.
retrospect, my thoughts are very daring, because they reflect only reflect what I imagine when hearing the music for shows on the artists and the motives behind the music, but my experience and conversations with members of these Movements confirm this yet. Nevertheless, of course, is up to you how they consume music. I want to put it but each to his heart, just try to let yourself be captivated by the aesthetics of music, which protects a one piece long before the day. This is also my answer when people ask me why I listen to music like Bethlehem or Life Lover, when I'm sad. The music creates an artificial protection from the outside world, which grants you time to reflect and to forget.
